A productized service is a service business that’s been packaged like a SaaS product. Fixed scope, fixed price, fixed timeline. No estimate calls, no scope-of-work negotiations, no surprise invoices. You buy the package, you get the deliverable.
Why it matters
Productizing eliminates the two highest-friction parts of buying a service: the discovery call and the estimate. For both buyer and seller, friction is what kills small deals. Productized services close in days, not months.
Common mistakes
- Productizing the wrong unit. "Build me an app" is too vague to productize. "Build me a 5-day MVP with auth, dashboard, and Stripe" is just specific enough to fix the price.
- Not saying no. A productized service has to refuse out-of-scope requests or it stops being productized. The "no" is the product.
